The Chicago Bulls saw a wing they would like back from injury, second-year small forward Chandler Hutchison, assigned to the G-League Windy City Bulls.
Injury news updates would be very welcome for any Chicago Bulls small forward, if they are of a positive nature. The Bulls have missed their top two small forwards, Otto Porter Jr. and Chandler Hutchison, in all but nine games each this season. Hutch could be closer to returning than OPJ, though, since he was just reportedly assigned to the G-League affiliate Windy City Bulls.
Hutch missed the Dec. 30 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, but he looks to be making progress to get back out on the court. Head coach Jim Boylen and the Bulls definitely could use the added wing depth once either Hutch or OPJ is able to work their way back into the mix.
OPJ is dealing with a hairline fracture in his foot that could keep him out until the All-Star Break, at the very least. He’s one of the key cogs that looked to make this Bulls team a playoff contender in a weak Eastern Conference in the bottom and middle of the pack.
However, since Hutch will re-join the Windy City Bulls, it could just be to get added reps until he’s ready to return. The Bulls next face the Utah Jazz at home at the United Center on Jan. 2. Maybe the two or three days of practice with the G-League affiliate could get Hutch ready to go.
Boylen hasn’t really experimented with any other looks at starting small forward beyond playing either shooting guard Zach LaVine or point guard Kris Dunn there. He hasn’t utilized shooting guard Denzel Valentine or veteran forward Thaddeus Young all that much at the three. Granted he hasn’t used Valentine or Young as much on the floor per night as he should either.
However, if Hutch returns soon, he would reach double-digit games played on the season. In the nine games he played in so far, he’s averaged 7.1 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, and 0.9 assists, while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three-point range.
