The Best Fashion Trends of 2018, According to You, Our Instagram Followers - Vogue.com

Sequins, bold shapes, and slick catsuits were a few of 2018’s key trends on the runways—but if you’ve been reading Vogue Runway, you already know that. What we here at VRHQ want to know is which trends have lasting power off the catwalk, so we polled our 4 million Instagram fans for their favorite trends of the year. Here’s what we learned.

Beige is Big

Prada Fall 2018, Burberry Spring 2019

Given the choice between Prada’s acid-colored neons and Burberry’s caramel shades of beige, our followers overwhelmingly chose beige, with a 64 percent majority. Shocked? Maybe not so much. While neon colors took hold in the street style scene, it’s arguably harder to pass through daily life in shocking pink than in a rich, chestnut colored silk dress. Catsuits Rule

Calvin Klein Fall 2018, Versace Fall 2018

Calvin Klein’s hazmat-inspired jumpsuits may have won in the comfort department, but Versace’s multi-colored catsuit won on Instagram with 69 percent of the vote. Consider this a case of who wore it most—few celebrities have tried out CK’s one piece, while Versace’s sexy catsuit was worn by Gigi Hadid and Dua Lipa this year.

The Absolute Unit Has Staying Power

Balenciaga Fall 2018, Maison Margiela Couture Fall 2018

John Galliano’s captivating statement on shape and size at Maison Margiela is alluring, but it’s Demna Gvasalia’s packed-on parkas at Balenciaga that captured hearts. Seventy percent of fans would rather wear Gvasalia’s boxy outerwear than Margiela’s shapely layering—maybe it’s just a matter of convenience. That all-in-one coat sure looks easier to get on and off than full body padding.

Social Media Loves Shine

Paco Rabanne Fall 2018, Marine Serre Fall 2018

In one of the closer races, sequins and pailettes beat out scarf dressing with a narrow 53 percent win. Both trends have an obvious optical appeal that makes each well suited for Instagram…but only one works with KiraKira.

Bras Are Over

Loewe Fall 2018, Saint Laurent Spring 2019

In a surprise twist, 67 percent of followers said they would rather not wear a bra at all—as at Saint Laurent’s Spring 2019 show—than wear an exposed one, like Loewe’s modest dress. So, will we be seeing lots of feather pastie selfies come spring?

Sexy Dresses Edged Out Crafty Ones

Celine Spring 2019, Matty Bovan Spring 2019

For all the debate around Hedi Slimane’s Celine debut, the public seems to be overwhelmingly in support of the designer’s slinky vision. 71 percent of fans chose something short and sexy for evening over a couture-minded dress from Matty Bovan, proving that skin is still very much in.

The Jury’s Still Out on Shorts

Miu Miu Resort 2019, Fendi Spring 2019

Short shorts or bike shorts was the question that stumped our audience the most. At the time of writing, short shorts had just a 51 percent majority over bike shorts—making the lesson here that shorts of any kind are still as necessary as ever.
