7 fashion industry insiders reveal their take on the future of fashion - AOL

The Fashion Institute of Technology hosted their Annual Awards Gala at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC on Wednesday night.

The star-studded event, which included Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, Amber Valletta, and "Say Yes to the Dress" star Randy Fenoli, raised over $1 million for the FIT Foundation. While the theme was "Innovation in Sustainability," we asked seven fashion industry veterans to weigh in on what the future of fashion means to them.

Amber Valetta, Actress and model

"The future of fashion is definitely about sustainability. There's so much innovation and creativity and business opportunities that this is where the industry is going. No shot of a doubt."

Joe Zee, Fashion guru and former creative director of ELLE Magazine

"I think the future of fashion is really about personalization. We're walking into an era where everybody wants everything personalized. Everything about our lives in personalized. So what music you want to hear -- you can pick and chose, you don't have to buy the whole album -- [and] what shows you want to watch -- you can pick and chose, you can watch it whenever you want to watch it. We all have access to so many things, so I feel like fashion is just going to become that as well. For example -- she wants something with sleeves, she wants something without sleeves, you want long, she wants short -- I think we are going to move into that place where we are going to start to find things really individualized and personalized for a lot of people, in a way that doesn't feel so genetically all the same. What we don't want is uniform."

Hilaria Baldwin, Best-selling author

"I'm a mom of four so comfort is key. I usually wear yoga pants. I don't know but comfort has to be there."

Ken Downing, Former senior Vice President and fashion director for Neiman Marcus

"I will tell you especially after returning from Paris and meeting so many of the amazing, young emerging talents that were at the LVMH prize, it is truly all about upcycling and the idea of taking great fashion, either from another decade or even as recently as repurposing fabrics and ideas that were clothes at another time and giving them another life. Every young talent I had met at the LVMH prize had their version of their upcycling instead of starting from scratch. Finding amazing pieces from the past via a month ago, a year ago, or 50 years ago and breathing new life into it and making it super cool...I also love the idea of taking the craft that came from human hands and giving it more life because it shouldn't just go away."

Danielle Bernstein, Influencer and founder of WeWoreWhat

"I think that it's evolving and it's always changing and so I like to stay ahead of the curve. But I think digital and social media is the way of the future. Everything is so instantaneous so it's about keeping up and creating new content all the time. That's the game."

Erin Shea, IMG Models
"It's hard to tell but I would love it to be a really big emphasis on sustainable fashion. The way that I really hope it goes is into regenerative fashion. So, instead of just saying 'how can we sustain what we're already doing,' if we could get to a point where what we are doing in fashion is actually leaving the world a better place than when we started and regenerating everything."

Joyce F. Brown, President of the Fashion Institute of Technology

" I think the future of fashion is evolving from what it was traditionally and how we thought it about it. I think it's very exciting. Given the times, the young generations are trying new ways of developing textiles and putting designs together, being considerate of the planet and trying to figure out ways to do things that are not toxic and that are sustainable and biodegradable. It's very exciting. The styles and designs are just as timeless but it will take time for us to get to whatever that common or comfortable level is with it but I think that the opportunity that young people have to really reform and change and help with the evolution of the styles is and the materials we use is extremely exciting."
