Howard's Homecoming Fashion Show Ties Together Industry Royalty... AND Coach!

"It’s necessary that we are counted as participants in fashion, we don’t just buy the brands," says Madison Star Brim.

During homecoming season, the lineup of festivities often includes ranking of the most popular events (the football game, the parade), to the more niche events (the day parties, the fashion show), and regarding the latter- it’s the fashion show that usually walks away with the most likes.

Spearheaded by Howard University student Indigo Brooks, this year’s homecoming fashion show was titled ‘Pages’ and was centered on a theme of Black excellence and studiousness– with a film of students reading various books in a campus library playing on stage while models walked the runway. The fashions on display were a mix of high-end to contemporary brands by local, Washington, DC fashion designers like Howard alum Ron David… and taking note from the show’s theme, it’s apropos that the event took a page out of the real fashion industry by allowing its models to wear Coach.

The show closed out with students modeling the brand’s Fall/Winter 2018 runway collection, which editors and buyers saw first-hand during New York Fashion Week- a fitting move that ties into the brand’s recent announcement of supporting more culturally relevant initiatives with its new campaign star Michael B. Jordan. Even more exciting was the discovery of legendary fashion stylist Misa Hylton Brim’s daughter, Madison Star Brim, who was the Assistant Fashion Coordinator for the show. Speaking on her daughter’s involvement with the show, Brim says, “It’s always fun for me to see the creativity level of the new, young and talented. My daughter always keeps me surprised with how fabulous she is!”

When ESSENCE asked whether she steps in to help her daughter, Brim continues, “Sometimes she may ask my advice about logistics [but] she likes to put in the work and let me sit back and enjoy it.” Reflecting on the big moment, Madison Star exclaimed, “It’s such a real honor to have worked with a high-end fashion label like Coach on our runway… and to have top magazine editors attend our fashion show -a Howard fashion show. It really proves that our hard work has paid off.”

The younger Brim continues, “It’s also necessary that we are counted as participants in fashion, you know… we don’t just buy the brands, we are students of the industry- going to class and preparing for the real world after graduation, and I’m just excited to be here and have the support of my mom and my family.”
