Models walk on water at Paris Fashion Week show

Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello turned a concrete jungle into a tropical paradise at tonight’s Saint Laurent fashion show.

As guests entered an open-air venue built around the Trocadero, a single row of gleaming white palm trees spanned single file across the length of an infinity pool. The scene felt like a picture postcard of a glamorous Hollywood Hills house perched in Los Angeles, but when the clock struck 8 p.m., the Eiffel Tower glittered in plain sight to a crowd that included Kate Moss, Carla Bruni and Salma Hayek.

Five minutes later, a model clad in a YSL black tuxedo – Vaccarello’s latest take on the brand’s iconic Le Smoking – strutted across the liquid runway in a pair of high-heeled snakeskin boots – a moment that caused a showgoer (next to me) to audibly say “Oh sh-t, she’s walking in the pool!”

A parade of glamazons including Kaia Gerber and Binx Walton splish-splashed their way down the flooded catwalk (calling up memories of Alexander McQueen, who also had his models walk on water). Some were styled in mod booties, others in chunky white platform sandals. No matter the heel height, not a single one slipped. (They’re called supermodels for a reason.)

For the finale, there were evening wear offerings aplenty for the jet-set woman who doesn’t think twice about wearing her black patent stilettos to the pool (or aboard her private yacht): breezy animal print caftans, sheer black gowns, glittery cut-out bathing suits. Spectacular.

As will be the shoe repair bill for those beautiful water-soaked shoes that navigated today’s show.
