Local designer fuses agriculture with fashion passion - KOIN.com

CANBY, Ore. (KOIN) -- A Canby High School graduate is fusing sheep farming with her passion for fashion.

Her name is Maddie Iverson and she's making a name for herself as a high fashion designer. Iverson's latest line was featured in Portland's well-known fall fashion show, "FashioNXT," where she won the distinction of 'Best Emerging Designer.'

But fans of her work may be surprised to learn that she grew up worlds away from city life.

Iverson's family owns a sheep farm in Canby and she draws inspiration from the rich culture surrounding agriculture and ranching.

"They're two completely different worlds," Iverson said. "I feel like my story can help bring them together and create a better understanding about what wool is, what animal products are in fashion and how it can be good and bad for the environment and how we can  make it even better."

Iverson is just the third apparel designer to be granted a license to use products from the well-known Oregon textile company, Pendleton.

All of her pieces are made by her own two hands, from babydoll swing coats and caplets to trousers and sheer gowns. Many of them feature complicated beading and embroidery.

Keeping pace with Iverson's growing number of professional accolades is her own personal charisma.

Anne Bocci, one of the judges at this year's FashioNXT, said, "She's also humble and kind so not only is she fierce and talented, but she also has personality and is kind."

That fierce talent has even landed some of Iverson's pieces in Bocci's own boutique on Northwest 12th Avenue in downtown Portland.

Iverson is gaining traction in the fashion design world, but she hasn't always been set on being a designer. It wasn't until partway through college at Oregon State University that she changed her major from graphic design after attending some fashion shows.

"I think it's really important to always believe in what you're doing and see the end goal and do whatever you need to do to reach that end goal," she said.

Speaking of goals, Iverson is already working on a new fashion line for next year's FashioNXT show. She's even putting leftover fabric to good use by turning it into home decor.
