A local observance to celebrate Black History Month kicked off Saturday at Auvil’s Sweet Nothings.
People gathered for the first of four programs throughout February to acknowledge the achievements and contributions of African-Americans. Saturday’s event included a fashion show with women and men modeling African attire. Others in attendance shared their favorite poems written by African-Americans with the audience.
Although the events will center around a specific culture, organizers encourage people of all backgrounds to attend.
“Everybody is invited to come. If you want to have an evening of entertainment, information and just good old fun, come any Saturday in February and something will be going on here,” said organizer Evelyn Cooper, who owns Lott’s of Art, which is located inside Auvil’s Sweet Nothings.
The remaining programs will be on February 9, 16 and 23. They will run from 3 – 5 p.m. each day. Auvil’s Sweet Nothings is located at 517 Everhart near the intersection of Alameda.
