Fashion design students show their skills on April 25

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University fashion students will present the 2019 Fashion Design and Merchandising Program Student Showcase and Runway Fashion Show at the Student Center ballrooms on April 25.

The event is free and open to the public.

The evening starts at 6 p.m. with a student showcase of exhibits in the J.W. Corker Lounge. The exhibits include examples of course work and student projects from a variety of classes. The exhibits are available for viewing until 7 p.m., when student showcases start.

Showcase features creations of four fashion design students

The featured event is the presentations of the final original garment collections from four senior fashion designers. The students are responsible for every detail of their collections — from concept to fashion illustration, fabric sourcing, patterning and construction, model and music selection, and accessory coordination.

Approximately 150 students from across campus are involved in this event, including cosmetology students from John A. Logan College, under the direction of Nancy Jo Crowell, who help complete the final runway looks.

The featured senior designers and names of their collections, listed by hometown are: 

ILLINOIS 

  • Chicago: Terrian Brownlow, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
  • Princeton: Brooklyn Kate Lehn, “Lanikai.”

CHINA

  • Tianjin: Jingyu Niu, “Childhood Amnesia.”

SAUDI ARABIA

  • Medina: Rawan Almghamsi, “Fly to Home.”

Runway fashion shows begin at 7 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the runway fashion session begins in Ballroom D with first-year fashion design students showing off their “Dressed for Effect” spring dresses.

The students participating are:

  • Ella Boren.
  • Ebun Daley.
  • Ingrid Hansen.
  • Leslee Lofton.
  • Khiyah Ransom.
  • Jingbo Wang.

The “Mardi Gras” experimental design pieces followed by a “Bridal Re-Imagined” collection will be presented by:

  • Rawan Almghamsi.
  • Terrian Brownlow.
  • Brooklyn Kate Lehn.
  • Jingyu Niu.

The fourth collection, “Time After Time,” are garments inspired by historical fashion from the 1940s through the 1980s by:

  • Jade Cochran.
  • Paige Gower.
  • Tracy Gholson.
  • Sina Maiberger
  • Rana Schenke.

More information about the Fashion Design & Merchandising Program is available at http://architecture.siu.edu/undergraduate/fdm/.  SIU Carbondale is the only public university in Illinois that offers a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design & Merchandising with specializations in fashion design, fashion merchandising and fashion styling.
